This unit looks at local businesses and examines how they operate then moves on to the development of larger organisations, their structures and ownership. There are two specialist units.

BTEC First Certificate
Introduction
The BTEC First Certificate in Business is a one year course at Level 2 offering you the chance to develop the personal skills and qualities you need to help you achieve your full potential at work or in further study.
When you undertake a Level 2 programme you get the choice of studying two vocational areas, having considered Business already you then select one other area which interests you from the two shown below
- Travel and Tourism
- Information Technology
You will also have the chance to develop your English and Maths skills, through GCSE or Key Skills routes.

- Doing Business Online
Many organisations have their own websites which can range from giving information only to fully interactive digital businesses. You will look at a variety of operations and find out what they do and the impact this type of business has on traditional organisations.
- Exploring Business Enterprise
Having looked at what makes successful businesses both traditionally and online, you will now investigate what it takes to set up a business venture for yourself.
Entry Requirements
You must be 16 or older and will need to show through experience and at interview that you are enthusiastic and keen to learn new skills. A reference from school will be requested.
You will generally have achieved GCSE at grade D/E with one or two at grade C. Alternatively you will have a Level 1 qualification at Merit or Distinction.
Duration The course will last for one year. For each Certificate, you will study for 180 hours.
Assessment
This BTEC course is assessed on the evidence you provide which consists of assignments and projects. Here you can show you have acquired a range of new skills and knowledge. Each unit is graded at pass, merit or distinction.
Your work will be assessed on a regular basis and you will be given constructive feedback so that your performance can be continually improved.
Progression
This programme gives you a firm foundation at level 2.
To progress to any level 3 qualification, from a range of vocational areas, such as a BTEC National Diploma you must complete both Certificates at merit or above.
You could also consider joining a work based learning programme at Level 3 in a vocational area of your choice.
You might also choose to move into employment in related business areas.
