Why should I study BTEC First Certificate for IT Practitioners?
The BTEC First Certificate for IT Practitioners is a recognised ICT qualification which focuses on the practical application of technology and is designed to stimulate your creativity and develop real-world, practical skills that will underpin your learning across a wide range of subjects. It is a modern qualification for this dynamic subject and aims to give you the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare you for employment.

What will I study?
Unit 1:
Using ICT to Present Information

Using ICT is the keystone for the certificate. The main elements of this module are:
  • Identifying business documents
  • Producing documents using templates and creating templates
  • Creating complex documents using a variety of techniques
  • Reviewing and improving documents
  • Using appropriate folder and file conventions


Unit 2
: Databases &

Unit 3:
Spreadsheet Software


Units 2 and 3 are 2 short units â€" one for databases and one for spreadsheets. The main elements are:
  • Understand the nature and principles of spreadsheets and databases
  • Create a database with queries, forms and reports
  • Document a database appropriately
  • Create complex spreadsheets with formulae, functions and features
  • Use a spreadsheet to present, analyse and interpret data


Unit 4:
ICT Graphics OR Website Development

Unit 4 extends the standard ICT tools into the area of graphics or websites â€" the choice will be determined by the College each year.

ICT Graphics option will give you the skill to use the hardware and software necessary to import and modify graphics images, and use images to enhance a document.

Website Development option will give you an understanding of websites and the laws governing them, the principles of website design and the skills required to be able to create a multiple page website.

What skills do I need?
  • Self-motivated as a large part of the course is based on practical work where meeting deadlines is vital.
  • An interest and enthusiasm for computers is a must.




How will I be taught?
You will be taught by individual specialist teachers. The teaching is practically based using current software and high specification technology. Each lesson will have a mix of teacher input and extensive student practical time.

How is the course assessed?
The course consists of 4 units and you will be assessed on the basis of a portfolio of work for each unit, made up of a set of assignments. The number of assignments may vary between modules. These assignments are marked internally and then externally moderated by the examination board.

What will this course prepare me for?
Knowledge and skills in ICT will provide you with a wide range of career options, as well as progression into further and higher education. The BTEC First Certificate course also provides a route into advanced level courses such as AS/ A2 ICT, Applied ICT and will provide you with effective skills for the study of a wide range of other subjects.

Private Study
As an approximate guideline AS subjects require 3-4 hrs of independent study each; A2 subjects 4-5 hrs each and GCSE subjects 2 hrs each.
