About this course

Minimum 2 relevant GCSE at D including Additional Science or a level 1 qualification in a relevant vocational area. A minimum grade D in GCSE Mathematics and English is also desirable.

BTEC First Diploma Applied Science
This course will allow you to cover introductory scientific principles such as units of measurements, atoms, cells, energy and classifications of materials and to get an overview of the science technician at work. It deals with personal skills, laboratory environment and its organisation, the duties and responsibilities of a science technician and the health and safety aspects of their job. It is designed to give students an introductory understanding of the scientific working environment, the impact of science and technology in society and the structure and function of a science department.

What will I be doing?
To achieve the qualification students must complete a total of six units. These units are divided into 2 core that everyone takes and 4 specialist units which are chosen by the teaching staff. The specialist units enable students to study a particular area in more depth.
The core units are:
  • Scientific principles
  • Science and the World of Work
The 4 specialist units are:
  • Chemistry Applications
  • Biological Systems
  • Environmental Science
  • Science in Medicine
How will I be assessed?
All units will be assessed by assignments / projects / exercises set by your tutors and marked internally. You will be expected to keep a portfolio of your work.

What can I do after completing this course?
On obtaining a BTEC First Diploma you can progress on to a BTEC National qualification in a relevant area.
