The course is designed to enable you to:
Show that you know and understand some important ideas in science
Use scientific knowledge to investigate and report on subjects that are of interest to scientists
Understand how science affects us and the environment
Carry out a forensic investigation of a crime scene.
Is it for me?
The course suits those with an interest in how science is used and who want to find out answers for themselves. It is particularly suited to those who prefer to learn science through practical work. This course lasts two years and is equivalent to four GCSE's.
What's involved?
Scientific Principles
This unit helps you develop a knowledge of scientific words and units that will help you to investigate and report on forces, motion, elements, mixtures, compounds, plant cells and animal cells.
Science and the World of Work
In this unit you will investigate and report on an organisation that uses science to make a product or provide a service. You will also consider how the media handles science, how science affects our quality of life and how technology and engineering helped science to develop.
Chemistry Applications
In this unit you will investigate and report on the structure of atoms, the different types of chemical bonds, the different types of reaction, the factors affecting reaction rates and reversible reactions, the different types of reaction.
Physical Science Applications
Learn about energy cycles, energy conversions and the efficiency of energy conversions, the different types of ionising radiation and their penetrating power, the different types of waves and their properties and how electricity is produced and used.
Anatomy and Physiology
Study the structure and functions of individual body systems, and relate the functions to their role in maintaining health. This unit also covers the roles of the nervous and endocrine systems, the importance of homeostasis to human body function and the factors involved in the maintenance of the human species.
Forensic Science Applications
Investigate and report on how evidence is recovered from a crime scene and then how this evidence is analysed in preparation of a statement for the court. The role of the forensic science service within the criminal justice system is also explored.
Progression
Upon successful completion students may progress on to the BTEC National Diploma in Applied Science or a range of other A levels. Some students will also enter employment.
