About this course

Minimum entry requirements are 3 GCSEs at grade D, including Art. The student must demonstrate a keen interest in Art and Design by showing a portfolio of work, including some drawings from observation, and a willingness to explore new ideas. A satisfactory reference is also required together with a successful interview.

BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design

Course Aims:
To introduce students to a range of Art and Design subject areas and to enable students to develop the basic skills and knowledge relevant to these areas, therefore providing a good basis to go on to a more advanced qualification.

Course Content:
A range of subject areas are investigated through six units, including;
Painting and Drawing
2-Dimensional & 3-Dimensional visual language
The work of other artists and designers
Specialist Art and Design study, including Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles Design, 3-dimensional Design and crafts, Fine Art and Multimedia.

Most of the work is practical, studio and workshop-based, supported by related written work.

Literacy, Numeracy and IT skills will be developed as a part of this course.

There will be the opportunity to take additional qualifications.

There is also an opportunity under the Enrichment programme to explore and develop another skill, either related or unrelated to the main study area.

Progression:
Successful students may progress to BTEC National Diploma courses in Art and Design, Graphic Design or Multimedia.

Exam:
Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, based mainly on practical assignments with some written components. All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Two of the units are externally assessed.

Other Costs:
Students are supplied with some basic materials, but will need to purchase various items as the course progresses. Students will also have to pay for any study trips. The tutor will provide details when the course starts.

Duration:
One year, full-time.
