All applicants will be interviewed before being offered a place on the course. The interview provides the opportunity for both the potential student and College staff to ensure that the course meets the needs and abilities of the student. Applicants will have gained a minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade E including Maths, Science and English or the BTEC Introductory Diploma in Engineering.

Course information:
BTEC First Diploma in Engineering


Course content:
This course covers a wide range of subjects in the general area of Engineering. A variety of teaching and learning activities are used, including practical workshop activities, computer work, projects, lectures and tutorials. The subjects (or units) are classed as either core or specialist.
Students study 8 units in total - 4 core plus 4 specialist.

Core units:
- Working practices in Engineering
- Using and interpreting Engineering information
- Applied electrical and mechanical science for technicians
- Mathematics for Engineering technicians

4 Specialist units:
- Using computer aided drawing techniques
- Electrical maintenance fundamentals
- Programming CNC machines
- Electronic circuit construction and testing

Keyskills in Application of Number, IT and Communication will be included.

A variety of teaching and learning activities are used including practical workshops, projects, lectures and tutorials.

The qualification is equivalent to 4 GCSE's A* to C.

Assessment procedure:
Assessment is based on coursework, assignments and projects.
