The BTEC First Diploma is a one year course that is designed to allow you to study a wide range of IT and computer related subjects. The course will provide you with the opportunity to gain the knowledge of computer systems, hardware, software and the skills needed to enter into a career in the information and communication technology industry. The course will also open the door to further studies at BTEC National level.

Course content

Unit 1 Using ICT to Present Information
Presenting information in several different formats is very important to organisations; here we cover all types of documents and the software (MS Office) that is available to achieve the correct business layouts.

Unit 2 Introduction to Computer Systems.
This unit looks at the hardware components and peripheral devices connected to a Pc. We also cover identifying computer systems components and modern specifications that will meet an individual users needs as well as the software and security that it needed in today’s business world.

Unit 4 Website Development
Using Dreamweaver 8, the successful learner will develop web designing skills that will be highly valued by industry and commerce. Web page design is a skill which is becoming more and more popular in the expanding %%/p

Unit 6 Networking Essentials.
Networking is so important if companies are to function efficiently and the knowledge of how networks function and are put together is essential for computer practitioners.
This unit cover both the practical hardware installation and theoretical knowledge required. The unit also has a general Pc practical hardware maintenance element.

Unit 7 Software Design and Development
This unit uses VB (Visual basic) to prepare learners for designing and developing software solutions. It is an ideal starting point for any learner considering a software development career path. There is an emphasis on game design.

Unit 9 Database Software
Database software is one of the most commonly used application packages and Access is an adaptable part of the MS Office Pro software range. Successful learners will cover the wide range of techniques offered by this software so that a variety of business solutions can be achieved.

Unit 10 Spreadsheet Software
Excel is a very versatile spreadsheet application program. Spreadsheets can be used to store, manipulate and analyse data and present it in a variety of ways. This unit looks at producing tailor made spreadsheet solutions to meet specific business users needs.

Unit 18 ICT Graphics
With this unit you will be taught to use a variety of different software applications including Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop, to create and modify graphic images that can be used for business purposes.
