Course programme
This is a one year full time course particularly of interest to those students who have completed an entry level or foundation course who may wish to enter a uniformed public service.
What does the course consist of?
There are 3 core units which everyone must study.
Unit 1: Unit 1: The Public Services
Covers the features of public services, entry requirements and pay and conditions.
Unit 2: Unit 2: Public Service Skills
Includes teamwork, interpersonal skills, writing skills and speaking and listening skills.
Unit 3: Unit 3: Public Service Fitness
Requires you to undertake and develop a personal fitness programme and participate in fitness tests.
Each student must also study 3 optional units such as Crime and its effects, Outdoor activities, Mapwork and navigation. You will have the opportunity to gain accreditation in the Key Skills of Communication, Application of Number and ICT. Time will be given to enable you to improve your own learning and plan how you would like your career to develop.
Your assessment will be based on your portfolio of work which will be graded at pass, merit or distinction for each of the units you have studied.
What else do I need to know?
You will be introduced to each new topic and then be required to carry out your own research in order to complete a set assignment. Some assignments will require a written report, some a presentation or display. You will be expected to take part in role-plays and simulations. Sometimes you will be working on your own, and at others in a group or team, there will also be a number of residentials to develop personal skills.
Some of your time will be based in a room with computing facilities. All books for reference will be provided, and also relevant magazines. You will be able to search for information on the College's CD Newspaper ROMs and on the Internet.
This is a full-time course but you will also have the opportunity to resit a GCSE in English or Mathematics should this be required.
This course is a suitable preparation for progressing to an advanced course providing you achieve at least merit grades. It would also provide a foundation for entering the public services at a later stage.
There will be additional costs for outdoor activities; however, these will be kept to a minimum. Students must participate in both water-based and land-based outdoor activities as these are an essential part of the course. Costs vary per course and year but parents should budget for a total of £150 per year.
