Information about the course

This is an intensive one-year preparation for Higher Education. The Foundation Diploma in Art and Design comprises nine units delivered in three stages; Exploratory, Pathway and Confirmatory. The structure supports the progressive development of the student towards independent and self-reliant learning.

During the Exploratory stage students are presented with challenging projects in a wide range of art and design disciplines including graphics, illustration, printmaking, drawing, painting, sculpture, 3-D design, costume, video/digital arts and photography. Contextual studies form an intrinsic element within the course and students are encouraged to develop observational, research and communication skills through written work (2 written pieces are a requirement), group critiques and seminars. A European visit towards the end of the first stage provides an essential experience, which acts as a springboard for the focussed work of the Pathway stage.

During this stage students study in one of four ‘umbrella’ pathways; Graphics, Design , Contemporary Digital Arts and Fine Art/Lens which leads to the final stage of the course. To enter the Confirmatory stage students must pass stages 1 & 2.

The course culminates in a personal confirmatory project of 6-8 weeks. Students are well-supported tutorially throughout the course, including application via UCAS for higher study. Students progress to a wide range of specialist Higher Education courses within Media and Art and Design disciplines nationwide.

The course equips students to make an application to study in higher education for BA or BSc in the UK or internationally. Higher National Diplomas or Foundation Degres (FdA).
