About this course

A minimum of 5 GCSE's at Grade C or above, one of which should be English and one Art or Design related or a BTEC 1st Diploma in Art & Design pass at merit and GCSE English or Key Skills Level 2 Communication.

Who is the course for?
The cours is for anyone wishing to either improve their knowledge of, or pursue a career in Art and Design but who has not yet settled on a specialist area.

What is the course about?
This is an exciting and highly practical 2 year modular programme. The course offers students the opportunity to study a wide range of Art and Design subjects. It is ideal for those aiming to progress to higher education and careers in the art and design industries but have not settled on a specilaisation. The course enables the most able students to progress to HE without the need for the additional Foundation year.
Within the Art and Design area you will be taught by a range of experienced staff, many of who are practicing Artists. You will explore subjects including: Fine Art Painting, Drawing, Graphics, Ceramics, Product Design, Sculpture, Fashion and Textiles and Photography and Art History.
You will also learn computer aided design techniques to help you express your design ideas.
A range of field trips and visits to exhibitions throughout the course will help to inspire you and help you develop a thorough knowledge of art and design and enable you to choose a specific pathway for the second year of the course.
The course units are delivered through assignment briefs and the completion of practical project work. Your work is assessed by your tutors and the grades awarded are externally verified by assessors appointed by the exam board.

Will I need anything else?
You will be expected to provide a basic art kit containing a range of painting and drawing equipment, a sketchbook and plastic portfolio. A list will be given to you at interview. You may also be required to purchase specialist materials for your project work.

How long & often do I attend?
This course is offered as a two year substantial programme and requires attendance of several lectures, practical sessions and workshops per week; additional time will also need to be spent by the students in carrying out project work and to complete research. You will be required to attend for a minimum of 90%.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous. You will be marked on both practical and written project work which will provide the evidence on which your grades will be based. There is no formal exam at the end of the course.

What opportunities will this lead to?
On completion of this qualification you may progress to Higher Education to study for HND Foundation Degree or BA (Hons) Degree in a wide range of art and design related subjects. Alternatively you may choose to seek employment within your chosen field of study.
You will be advised and assisted in your choice of progression by your course tutors.
