Why should I study Health & Social Care at Cardinal Newman College?These courses are respected by universities and employers. What is involved?
All of the courses offer the opportunity for students to practice and develop a range of academic and personal skills that are vital to support their successful progression. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning and making plans for their personal development. The department is committed to the expert learner and the learner voice where students are empowered to be involved in the departmental planning and delivery.
BTEC National Certificate
This Level 3 course is equivalent to two A Levels and is ideal for students who wish to pursue a range of careers, including: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, teaching (including early years), health promotion, nursing, paramedic, social work, youth work and podiatry. However, it is also ideal for students who have an interest in health and social care but wish to progress into diverse subject areas.
What will I study?
12 Units will be studied over two academic years. These include:

· Developing effective communication in health and social care

· Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for health and social care

· Lifespan development

· Sociology

· Personal and professional development - this unit involves at least 100 hours of placement to be successfully completed in a range of health and social care or early years settings. Students must reflect on each experience using tutor and mentor reports and their own evaluations and produce a portfolio
BTEC National Diploma
This Level 3 course is equivalent to three A Levels and will form your main area of study. It is ideal for students who wish to enter employment in health and social care and take further professional body examinations or complete NVQs. It will also enable students to progress into higher education to study health related degrees such as speech and language therapy, health promotion, nursing, social work and youth work.

What will I study?
18 Units will be studied over two academic years. These include:

· Developing effective communication in health and social care

· Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care

· Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for health and social care

· Lifespan development

· Health education

· Physiological disorders

· Personal and professional development - this unit involves at least 100 hours of placement to be successfully completed in a range of health and social care or early years settings. Students must reflect on each experience using tutor and mentor reports and their own evaluations and produce a portfolio
