About this course

Students should be at least 18 years old and have an appropriate Level 3 in Early Years/Care or an A Level qualification. In addition, students should have GCSE English Language at C or above. Mature students with vocational experience or who have studied an approved preparatory course may be accepted at the discretion of the College.

Awarding Body and Name of Qualification: BTEC (The Business and Technology Education Council), HNC Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families

The BTEC Higher National Certificate Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families is a part time course aimed at day care, education and community employees working or wishing to work with children in their early years (0-8 years) in the statutory, voluntary, private and not for profit sectors. It provides a wide range of knowledge, develops relevant skills and offers a choice of options.

Students can use their HNC qualification to progress to a range of Universities. Gaining a BA qualification may lead to entry on to a PGCE or Graduate Teacher programme or to the Early Years Professional Status.

Course content

Students study 10 UNITS and complete a PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE LOG PROGRAMME UNITS INCLUDE

When will I receive my results?

Results will be forwarded on as soon as they are received at the college. Please note that certificates, where awarded, can take up to 4 months to be received at the college before forwarding on to learners.

Delivery

Length of Course - 33 weeks per year for 2 years. Hours per week - 7 on Tuesday. Mode of attendance - Part Time. Method of delivery - Classroom based + Work-based learning

Assessment

Continuous Assessment, including workplace assessment, Portfolio.

Assessment: A range of methods will be used, including assignments, case studies, essays, reports, practical exercises and presentations. In general, a problem solving, work related approach is used. Assessments are carefully spread through the two years of the programme. There are no external examinations. Workplace assessment is an integral part of the programme.

Progression

This BTEC Higher National Certificate prepares students for a range of careers in child care at a supervisory management level as well as offering them the unique opportunity of achieving a BA Honours Degree in Education Studies after a further two years part-time study at a University such as the University of Hertfordshire. Furthermore, this BTEC HNC qualification may give credit towards related professional awards and degrees, in areas such as social work, health care, social sciences, humanities, initial teacher training and the public and private sector services.
