All applicants will be required to:
  • Attend an interview with the relevant tutor for the course and complete any vocational assessments
  • Demonstrate a career interest in the vocational subject offered
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm for the chosen vocational area
  • To have evidence that the parents or guardians support the pupil?s choice
  • Be able to show you have reasonable levels of literacy and numeracy, as determined by the Adult Literacy and Numeracy National Standards. For example GCSE 'E' or above in English and Maths.
In addition you need to have a strong desire to study different specialist areas of Horticulture and Small Animal Care.

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE?

1 Year Full Time

HOW OFTEN DO I COME TO COLLEGE?

2.5 days per week (including key skills for 16-18 year olds)

WHAT WILL THE INTERVIEW INVOLVE?

Students will have a 15-20 minutes presentation by section leader regarding the college and courses available and the different levels of qualification and career definitions, career and course progression, what the college expect from students and how they are assessed.

Then, students interviewed by 2 members of staff individually - students should bring a pen

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course is designed to encourage you to develop the personal skills and qualities you need for work, learning and to help you achieve your full potential. It is a practical 'hands on' programme taught in the context of real jobs and careers in a chosen vocational sector. This gives you the chance to explore the opportunities offered in Horticulture and Small Animal Care, and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
There are three core units, two personal skills units and three vocational option units. For example:
  • Starting Work in the Land based Industries
  • Working Safely in the Land-based Industries
  • Skills Development in the Land-based Industries
  • Social Responsibility at Work
  • Financial Management
  • Horticulture
  • Practical Estate Skills
  • Caring for Small Animals
HOW WILL I LEARN?
The majority of the work will be produced individually but there may be occasions where group work is necessary. Although the course is as practical as possible students will undertake some theory work e.g. research and writing.

HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?

The units are graded P (pass), M (merit) or D (distinction). You need to achieve a minimum of a pass grade in each unit to qualify for a qualification grade. A qualification grade of pass, merit or distinction will be stated on the certificate.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
On achieving this qualification you will have a portfolio of evidence as well as a reference. Depending on other qualifications you may have or achieve at school you can apply at 16+ for the following courses:

Level 2 First Diploma in Animal Care or Horticulture

Level 3 National Diploma in Animal Management or Horticulture

Level 3 National Certificate in Countryside
