Course programme

BTEC Introductory Diploma in Land and Environment - Horticultural
This one year, full-time course (running on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays), is intended for students wishing to gain a Level 1 horticulture qualification. It is suitable for students who do not meet the entry requirements for the First Diploma in Horticulture. It may also be suitable for learners that have mild learning difficulties or limited behavioural problems.

It is a practical course; the primary learning goal is the BTEC Introductory Diploma in Land and the Environment qualification offered by Edexcel. It covers the following topics:
  • Planting, staking and maintaining plants
  • Plant propagation
  • Maintenance of grass surfaces
  • Use of land-based machinery
  • Plant structures, plant growth and soils
  • Environmental issues
  • Health and safety
  • Investigative work in the land-based industries

Students are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their competence; therefore basic literacy and numeracy skills are required.

In addition the following secondary learning goals are components of the course:
  • Entry Level or Key Skills Level 1
  • Information Technology
  • Application of Number and Literacy

Learning support is a key component of this course and depending on need (if warranted, as ascertained by assessment), additional support may be provided by Learning Skills Assistants (LSAs).

Course progression
Many students progress onto further horticultural courses, for example:
  • First Diploma in Horticulture
  • NVQ Level 2 Horticulture Work-based Learning

Entry requirements
This course is open to students who have completed a Foundation land-based course at Sparsholt College (or any other approved centre, subject to interview and satisfactory references), or those who do not meet the entry requirements for the First Diploma in Horticulture (subject to interview, satisfactory references and a full assessment of specific needs).

Applicants will need to have achieved at Entry Level or have a GCSE profile of E-F.

Entry onto the course is based on the College being able to adequately meet the needs of individual learners, whist not compromising the enjoyment of and access to the course by others. The College therefore requires full disclosure of the difficulties, disabilities and specific needs of applicants during the interview and assessment process. In the event of disclosure subsequently proving not to be complete, we will have no option but to withdraw any place offered on the course (even after commencement and attendance on the course).
  • Please Note: We reserve the right to not offer a place where, in our assessment, we believe that the needs of individuals cannot be practically met by the course.
