Brief Description of the Course:

(NB. All programmes are based on credit accumulation. Each unit of study is worth either 5 or 10 credits towards the total amount needed to achieve the qualification)

This is a new BTEC course that has replaced the First Diploma Fish Husbandry as a level 2 introductory course in order to fit the new National Qualifications and Credit Framework

This is a broad based course which covers areas including Fisheries, Countryside and Environment.

This course provides you with a comprehensive introduction to Countryside and Environment Studies. It is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of the fisheries industry, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the fisheries industry.

You also have the opportunities to study countryside sports and recreational activities as well as visiting fisheries, fish farms, ornamental fish retailers and public aquaria.

Entry Criteria:

This course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following qualifications are needed:

¨ a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade D or above to include English Language

¨ or equivalent qualifications.

¨ Undertake Work Experience in the Landbased Industries

¨ Environmental & Landbased Business

¨ Introduction to Caring for Ornamental Aquatics

¨ Introduction to Fish Biology

¨ Introduction to Fish Health

¨ Participating in Providing Estate Maintenance

¨ Introduction to Aquatic Ecology

Assessments:

Assessments will include assignments and practical work. There are no formal examinations on the Level 2 Diploma.

Possible Careers / Jobs:

Possible jobs: Fisheries Worker, Fish Farm Assistant, Education Officer, Fisheries Worker, Park Ranger, Fisheries Bailiff.

Possible employers: DEFRA, Environment Agency, Local Wildlife Trusts National Trust, Natural England, Sports Fisheries, Fish Farms, Ornamental Fish Retailers

Progression:

The vast majority of students usually progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Diploma courses if they gain sufficient merits on the Level 2 Diploma.

Industrial / Work Experience:

This course includes an on campus work experience element which enables the student to gain valuable practical experience whilst enhancing their knowledge of the industry. The work experience is delivered over one day per week for the full year.

Special Requirements:

1 Specialist Clothing and Equipment: Outdoor clothing, chest waders, steel toe cap boots, waterproofs, wellington boots
