Course programme

Summary: A good option if you are interested in architecture, civil engineering, surveying or the more technical side of construction

Course description: All types of construction whether that be office blocks, domestic housing, bridges, roads or railways need to be designed, planned and the building process managed. If you are interested in a career in architecture, civil engineering, construction management, building surveying or the more technical side of construction this course offers a vocational alternative to A-levels. The construction industry in East Anglia is expanding at the fastest rate, over the next 5 years it is expected to grow by 14% offering a good range of job opportunities across the sector.
The course combines classroom based learning, practical activities and engagement with employers to give you an insight into the various roles within the industry as well as providing worthwhile relevant work experience. Employers such as Kier, LSI Architects, Morgan Sindall and Ingleton Wood are involved by providing professional experience and site visits. Many of our previous students have gone onto to secure employment with the employers they meet on the course.
To take your classroom learning out onto site, City College Norwich was the first further education college to become involved in Constructionarium. This week long residential provides a “hands-on” construction experience for students; where they construct scaled down versions of bridges, buildings, dams and civil engineering projects from all around the world.
To widen your knowledge and experience of the industry we have a regular trips abroad to look at architecture, planning and galleries. In previous years we have visited Berlin, Barcelona and Paris.
You will study a range of units which may include

Topographic Surveying in Construction and Civil Engineering - carry out land surveys using appropriate equipment to produce accurate drawings

Design Procedures in Construction – learn about construction methods and factors that influence design, and develop skills in communicating ideas and in translating construction details into written and graphical instructions

Construction in Civil Engineering – learn the techniques, processes and materials used in the construction of civil engineering works

Sustainable construction – start to understand which features of the natural environment need to be protected and how the activities of the construction and built environment sector impact on the natural environment

Computer-Aided Drafting and Design for Construction – gain knowledge of how CADD is used to produce drawings and skills in using CADD software to produce 2D drawings and 3D models.
Good English and maths skills are essential for most jobs and courses you will progress onto. The Government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills and your course programme will reflect this key aim. Depending on your grades when you start your course, you could either study Functional Skills or GCSEs alongside the other parts of your course programme. Please check our English and Maths page for further information.
