The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport provides an introduction to the sports sector for learners looking to build a career in sport, within one of its occupational areas. These areas include careers in exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development and the outdoors education. The Extended Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels.

The programme provides you with a range of skills and experiences transferable to work in the leisure sector and related industries. The course allows progression to degree level study in areas such as sports science, sports therapy, coaching and teaching. Students will be well equipped to work in coaching roles or work in fitness clubs and leisure centres.


The course offers a firm grounding across a range of sports disciplines. Across the two years of the course there are 19 units of study covered including:
Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
Sports Nutrition
Psychology for Sports Performance
Sports Injuries
Sport and Exercise Massage
Sports Coaching
Fitness Training and Programming
Students may also have the opportunity to complete a certificate in fitness instruction allowing them to work in gyms and health clubs and a range of coaching certificates including the FA Level 1 coaching award. There will be a residential outdoor adventure trip at the start of each year during which students will be able to experience a range of outdoor pursuits including rock climbing, caving and abseiling. During the trip you will complete a unit of study under the supervision of expert outdoor education instructors.

Year 1 course = 90 credit Diploma
Year 2 course = a further 90 credits providing in total a 180 credit Extended Diploma
