He is a National Coach Tutor and National Ratification Officer for the development, delivery, accreditation and ratification of all Occupational Intervention and Disengagement Physical Skills Training including Train the Trainer Development Programmes.

Course programme

Objectives & Course Content:

To achieve the BTEC Level 3 Advanced award in Physical Restraint each individual will be expected to:

1. Describe the rights and restrictions imposed by UK statute and common law in relation to physical restraint.

2. Outline the rights and restrictions imposed by Children's legislation in relation to physical restraint.

3. Apply the requirements of Health and Safety statute and associated Regulations and show how they apply to physical restraint.

4. Identify and explain the risks associated with physical restraint and describe how to minimise those risks.

5. Explain and apply holding, escorting and restraining and non-harmful seated restraint techniques.

6. Demonstrate and explain how to gradually de-escalate and relax restraint to allow the subject being restrained to regain self-control.

7. Differentiate between non-harmful methods of control and more restrictive methods of control and when the use of such methods would be considered appropriate.

In addition to the above, those individuals wishing to achieve NFPS Instructor Accreditation will be expected to achieve the following points.

To achieve NFPS Physical Restraint Instructor Accreditation each individual will also be expected to:

1. Instruct delegates in all of the various appropriate technical physical skills required for the competent application of physical restraint and breakaway including appropriate methods of restraining, holding still and containing young people.

2. Coach delegates in the correct physical techniques involved in coaching physical restraint in relation to and in compliance with the Manual Handling Regulations 1992.

3. Instruct delegates in the risks associated with the use of physical force for the purpose of physical restraint, paying special attention to Postural Asphyxiation.

4. Be able to demonstrate that they can apply the principles and skills taught in various dynamic physical restraint situational scenarios.

Certification:

1. On successful completion of the practical aspects of the course all delegates will receive the BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award in Physical Restraint Practice.

2. Those individuals who successfully pass the instructional & coaching assessment will also receive the NFPS Instructor Certificate in Physical Restraint Practice.
