Course Description:

The BTEC Level 3 Subsidary Diploma in Uniformed Public Services is a qualification that is equivalent to one full A Level. The programme is designed to enable students to gain both academic and practical experience in preparation for service life, although many of the skills gained are transferable, for example team building and leadership.

The course is studied over one year with or without A Levels. Successful students can progress on to a Level 3 Diploma in the second year, which is equivalent to two full A Levels when combined with the Subsidiary Diploma.

Content

Students study a total of six units including:

  • Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services (Theory and Practical)
  • Citizenship, contemporary society and the public services (Theory Unit)
  • 2 hours Practical Fitness per week
  • Outdoor Adventurous Expeditions (Theory and Practical)
  • Government and Politics and the Public Services (Theory Unit)
  • Command and Control in the Uniformed Public Services (Theory)

Level: Level 3 Course Type: Full Time Entry RequirementsEntry Requirements:

  • Four GCSE's at grades including 2 from Maths/English/PE/Science A* to C or a Merit grade in First Diploma Public Services.
  • Five GCSE's are required for students wanting to study this qualification with other A Levels, ideally with an A or B grade in their chosen A / AS subject.
  • Satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attitude to study and potential for development.
  • Specific interest in pursuing a career within the Uniformed Services.

Assessment and Progression:

The styles of assessment are a real strength of the programme, with the emphasis on coursework rather than exams, allowing students to achieve their full potential. There are a diverse range of methods used including written assignments, group work, laboratory reports, phase tests, presentations, practical tests and simulations.

Grades are awarded on a Pass, Merit or Distinction basis.

All students are designated a Personal Tutor who has the responsibility of supporting learning and working monitoring progress through weekly group or individual tutorials. The Personal Tutor will set achievement goals with students and feedback regularly to the individual on progress toward meeting these whilst also providing information to their parents / guardians via reports and consultation evenings.

Progression

The programme does not guarantee employment in the services, however, on successful completion of the programme students should be better equipped and prepared to put themselves into a more competitive position within the services selection process. The course also provides progression opportunities into higher education. Students wishing to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Uniformed Public Services must achieve a minimum merit grade on the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma.
