What are the Course Details?
This course deals with the principles of animal care, and the practices found within the animal care industry. It is primarily a theoretical course, but does include some practical involvement with animals and work within the animal care industry. This course is equivalent to 1 A Level in the first year, with progression to a second year to complete the BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management. The full Diploma is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

Candidates are expected to show enthusiasm and commitment to a career working with animals.

What will I Learn?
Each learner will study the following Core units:

• Animal Health
• Animal Biology
• Practical Animal Handling and Husbandry
• Animal Anatomy and Physiology
• Industry Experience in the Animal Care Sector
• Specialist Project Study

Each learner will then study twelve specialist industry related units:

• Animal Nursing
• Business Management
• Exotic Animal Management
• Aquatic Management
• Farm Livestock Management
• Breeding and Genetics
• Animal Behaviour
• Grooming Parlour Management
• Kennel and Cattery Management
• Animal Nutrition
• Pet Store Management
• Principles of Ecology

How will I Learn?
There are theoretical and practical sessions. You will be expected to carry out personal research in your own time throughout the course. There will be a period of work experience in industry during the course.
You will take Functional Skills at Level 2 or 3 depending upon qualifications already achieved.

How will I be Assessed?
Assessment is ongoing and varied and takes the form of assignments, practical work, laboratory testing and oral presentations.

What Enrichments are Available?
Dog grooming is offered in the first year. Second year learners have a range of enrichment options to choose from. All learners will take part in regular practical unit duties in our purpose built Animal Care Centre.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
All learners will go on a minimum of 5 visits per year. In previous years these have included: the Lincolnshire Show, Crufts, Local Kennels & Catteries, Lincoln University (Riseholme campus), Local Livestock Farms, Nature Reserves, Exotics Fair (residential Germany), Yorkshire Mounted Police, Police Dog Handlers, B&K Universal (Laboratory animal breeders), Blue Cross, The Deep, Twycross Zoo and London Zoo.

Is there any Work Experience?
Yes. Learners will gain work experience in the College's well equipped and recently extended Animal Care Centre.

What can I Progress to?
Upon successful completion of the Diploma; it is possible to progress into higher education to study:

• Animal Behaviour
• Animal Sciences
• Veterinary Nursing
• Animal Management

Alternatively successful learners may apply directly to the industry for employment in such areas as: kennel and cattery management, pet shops and grooming parlours, animal breeding establishments, animal sanctuaries, stables, animal collections and wildlife parks, veterinary surgeries, zoos, animal laboratories and Colleges.
