BTEC National Award/Certificate/Diploma in Music (Performing) (B1006E)

What are the Course Details?
The BTEC National Award in Music (Performing) is equivalent to one A-Level, the Certificate to two A-Levels and the Diploma to three A-Levels.

Is the Course for Me?
This course is designed for and offers a number of opportunities for learners with an interest in popular music and related areas. Potential learners should have a good level of playing or singing ability.

What will I Learn?
In the BTEC National Award you will cover a range of practical, technology and theoretical units such as Music Performance Techniques, Studying Music from Around the World, Music Theory, Sound Recording and Improvising Music.

If you successfully progress onto the second year to study the Certificate or Diploma you will extend your practical theory and technology knowledge by studying units such as Sound and Music Industry, Sound Creation, Composing Music and Planning a Music Project.

The National Award in Music (Performing) is a 6 unit qualification (achieved in year one only).

The National Certificate in Music is a 12 unit qualification (takes 2 years).

The National Diploma in Music is an 18 unit qualification (takes 2 years).

How will I Learn?
Each unit will contain a number of assignments for the learner to complete within a designated time. Units will enable the learners to develop skills and knowledge in each area through practical workshops, written assignments, presentations and performances. You will have the opportunity to write, play, record and produce your own CD's.

How will I be Assessed?
Your progress will be measured in a number of ways including practical projects, written assignments and internal assessment throughout the course. You will receive information about this through verbal feedback and written feedback from an assignment or project, and grading of your work. Assessment of student work is monitored by an external verifier from the examining body.

What Enrichments are Available?
The National Award, Certificate and Diploma qualifications will allow flexibility within the programme to study additional subjects and take part in enrichment activities. A range of enrichment activities exists for learners to tap into such as visits to Alton Towers, team and sporting activities and creative options such as life drawing and website design.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits may be arranged throughout the course where it is thought that they support the units being studied and will provide additional learning benefits. In previous years learners have visited the home city of the Beatles and large scale music industry events and exhibitions.

Is there any Work Experience?
Learners will be expected to undertake public performances throughout the course which are classed as work experience. Learners are required to put on their own music events and provide musical entertainment for events across the College including the annual awards ceremonies.

What can I Progress to?
Learners who successfully complete a BTEC National Award will be eligible to apply for the Certificate or Diploma level of study. Entry to these will depend on the number of units achieved whilst studying for the Award.

Successful completion of 6 units is required for progression to the Certificate.

Successful completion of 8 units is required for progression to the Diploma.

Learners who successfully complete the Certificate or Diploma will be eligible to apply to a range of higher education courses. The department has an excellent record of learner progression to higher education with over 90% of leavers gaining entry into universities.

As the BTEC course focuses on the vocational skills within the music industry, learners will also be prepared for the first stage of a career in the future.

Learners studying on any of the three levels of the Music course also gain transferable skills such as good communication skills, confidence and strong teamwork skills, which are required in most areas of employment or on any other courses.

Other Learner's Experiences;
John McFarlane progressed to working as a community Musician in Lincolnshire.

Andrew Needham progressed to the University of Huddersfield to study Music Production.

Matthew Groizard progressed to study composition at Thames Valley University.
