BTEC National Award/Certificate/Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting) (B0012P)

What are the Course Details?
This course will enable learners to develop skills, knowledge and experience in Performing Arts including Acting, Stage Management and Directing. The course covers a wide spectrum of activities in order for the learner to experience every aspect of drama and theatre. The work is largely practical, but does contain elements of theory and written work. The BTEC National Award Performing Arts (Acting) is equivalent to one A' Level, the Certificate to two A' Levels and the Diploma to three A' Levels.

Is the Course for Me?
The Diploma is aimed at learners who wish to prepare for a career in performing arts or progression onto higher education. The structure of the course allows learners to gain experience in a wide variety of disciplines and techniques in order to build a varied and flexible portfolio of skills. The learner must be prepared to study and develop in each area of the course.

What will I Learn?
In the BTEC National Award (Year 1) you will look at particular units such as Performing to an Audience, The Principals of Acting and Drama Improvisation.

If you successfully progress onto the second year to study a Certificate or a Diploma then you will look at such units as Classical Theatre, Acting Auditions and Applying Acting Styles.

Each unit will contain a number of assignments for the learner to complete within a designated time. Units will enable the learners to develop skills and knowledge in each area through practical workshops, written evaluations, presentations and performances.

How will I Learn?
The sessions will include a varied mix of theory and practical work throughout your time on the course. All types of learning styles will be covered using such teaching methods as presentations, DVD's, research, workshops, demonstrations, talks from guest speakers etc. This will enable all learners to get the most out of the programme and achieve the best grades they can.

How will I be Assessed?
All of the BTEC National courses are assessed at regular intervals throughout the year. Each individual unit involves one or more assessments, these will be a mixture of practical and written work for each unit.

Assignments are graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction. A final grade will be awarded for each unit.

What Enrichments are Available?
The College also offers a wide range of enrichment opportunities, particular subjects that complement the acting course are Introduction to Resort Repping, for learners who want to progress onto working as Holiday Reps and Events Management so learners gain experience of organising performance events as well as performing in them.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
We endeavour to go on as many trips as possible throughout the two year programme. We have visited local theatres to complement learning and the subjects that we study. We also get involved with performance opportunities outside of College e.g. in the past few years we have performed pieces at events in Huddersfield and Hull.

Is there any Work Experience?
The public performances are classed as work experience as we work in a professional manner following the procedures of a professional theatre environment. In addition, in previous years students have also worked with theatre groups and backstage at professional theatres. We encourage all our learners to gain as much professional experience as possible and would support students who were pro active in finding their own work experience.

What can I Progress to?
If you successfully complete a BTEC National Award you would then progress onto a second year of the course where you would work towards achieving a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting).

Successful completion of a BTEC National Certificate qualifies the learner to study in higher education at Foundation Degree level.

Successful completion a BTEC National Diploma qualifies the learner to gain entry to higher education at Degree level.

The department has an excellent record of learner progression to higher education with over 90% of leavers gaining entry into universities and drama schools.

As the BTEC course focuses on the vocational skills in the performing arts sector, learners will also be prepared for the first stage of a career in the future.

In addition, learners studying on any of the three levels of the Acting course gain transferable skills such as good communication skills, confidence and strong teamwork skills, which are required in most areas of employment or on any other courses.

Other Learner's Experiences;
Lloyd Parker and Katie Dunsmore have progressed to De Montfort University Leicester to study BA Hons Drama.

Please Note:
Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
