Is the Course for Me?
This is a highly practical course with the emphasis on performing.
Potential learners should have completed a GCSE in Dance or be involved in some form of dance training activity or performance.
What will I Learn?
This is a highly practical course where you will be introduced to a broad range of dance skills and techniques. Units such as Performing Arts Business and practical units such as Choreography, Contemporary Dance and Ballet Technique will be included.
The course is made up of practical and theory projects and workshops giving learners the opportunity to expand their horizons within the field of Dance. Assignments on the course vary in timescale depending on the nature of the project and will involve performance work, written assignment and presentations.
The National Award in Performing Arts (Dance) is a 6 unit qualification (achieved in year one only).
The National Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance) is a 12 unit qualification (takes 2 years).
The National Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance) is an 18 unit qualification (takes 2 years).
How will I Learn?
The sessions will include a varied mix of theory and practical work throughout your time on the course. All types of learning styles will be covered using teaching methods such as presentations, DVD's, research workshops, demonstrations etc...
How will I be Assessed?
Your progress will be measured in a number of ways including performance work, written assignments, evaluations and presentations. Internal assessment will take place throughout the course. You will receive information about this through verbal feedback and written feedback from an assignment or project, and grading of your work.
Assessment of student work is monitored by an external verifier from the examining body.
What Enrichments are Available?
The National Diploma, Certificate and Award qualifications will allow flexibility within the programme to study additional subjects and take part in enrichment activities. A range of enrichment activities exists for learners to tap into such as visits to Alton Towers, team and sporting activities and creative options such as life drawing and website design.
Are there any Trips or Visits?
You will be required to attend trips that will enrich the learner experience and knowledge. Visits to see performances or to perform in front of a live audience will become part of the course.
Is there any Work Experience?
Public performances will form the basis of the work experience as we work in a professional manner following the procedures of a professional theatre environment. In addition previous students have worked with local schools and professional theatres.
We encourage all our learners to gain as much experience as possible and would support students who were proactive in finding their own work experience.
What can I Progress to?
Learners completing a Diploma or Certificate may wish to progress into Higher Education in order to develop their skills further and enter the employment sector. It may be possible for learners with highly developed vocational skills to enter employment directly from the course. Learners completing an Award may wish to diversify into other Level 3 qualification areas.
Other Learner's Experiences;
Most learners progress onto Higher Education before employment within the field of dance and the performing arts. Previous learners have progressed to universities such as De Montford University, Lincoln University and Manchester Metropolitan University.
