BTEC National Award in Children's Care, Learning and Development

What is the BTEC National Award in Children's Care, Learning and Development?
You will study a number of units over two years covering a range of child care related subjects which give you an understanding of children and their development. These units include:
- Positive Relationships for Children's Care, Learning and Development
- Positive Environments for Children's Care, Learning and Development
- Promoting Children's Development
- Safeguarding Children
- Reflecting on Practice in the Children's Care, Learning and Development Sector. This unit involves completing a minimum of 60 hours of work experience. The college will help you to achieve this.
The award is equivalent to one A level and carries a maximum of 120 UCAS points. Much of the work you do will involve looking at child development and how, as a child care worker, you can help children to reach their full potential.

Is the National Award in Children's Care, Learning and Development suitable for me?
The award is suitable for any one interested in working with children who does not want to study the full time child care course. It will not give you a professional qualification but it can be studied along side other A levels or BTEC awards.

How will I learn?
You will have a mixture of formal and less formal learning experiences. Some sessions will be in the form of lectures but you will also participate in a mixture of activities - whether working individually or in groups. You will participate in role plays, discussions and presentations. Some time will be available for supported independent study to help you with course work and your own research.

How will I be assessed?
All units are assessed internally by your staff and then moderated by the exam board (Edexcel). Your work will be graded pass, merit or distinction. Pass gives you 40 UCAS points; merit gives you 80 and a distinction gives you 120). These grades are equivalent to A level grades E, C and A respectively.

Course costs
You will need to purchase course materials. In addition you will need to pay for a CRB check, if you have not already had one.
