Course programme
Naturally the focus is on developing your skills as a performer who can work in all three aspects of acting, singing and dancing. Normally you would be strong in two of the areas and slightly weaker in another. However we expect that you would put the same amount of effort into all of the aspects of performance to ensure that you achieve to your full potential.
We would hope to use the skills and interests of the group as a whole when deciding the type of shows to perform and there will be a mixture of lunchtime and evening performances.
These students perform the final flourish of their physical theatre project.
What will I study on this course?
The BTEC National Award in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) is a two-year course consisting of 6 units and is equivalent to one A Level. You should take another 3 AS or A2 courses alongside the Certificate.
Both Performing Arts courses combine exploration of Music, Drama and Dance and the links between them. They are practical, work-related courses, requiring imagination, sensitivity and the ability to get on well with others. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
How is this course assessed?
4 hours 30 mins per week of directed study time.
Rehearsing, Performing, Musical Theatre Performance
These three units enable you to develop skills in performance, music and dance. You will develop a broad range of performance skills in dance, drama and singing/music, and will have the opportunity to take on a production role (stage management, lighting or sound).
During each term of the course you will work towards a performance that might involve acting, dance, singing, or a combination of disciplines.
You will investigate the structure of the performing arts industry through case studies, work placements and visiting lecturers and theatre companies. Towards the end of the course you will plan a possible route into employment either immediately or after further study.
What kind of student will do well on this course?
A typical performing arts student is lively, ambitious, hardworking and expressive.
It is vital that you should be willing to perform in public, work with others, solve problems, plan your own learning, and communicate effectively in speech. You should also be able to use information technology for research, and for drafting and writing coursework.
