What are the Course Details?
This course provides a specialist work-related qualification for people seeking a career in the Social Care sector. It is equivalent to three vocational A Levels and attracts UCAS points.
During the first year of the course you will undertake the BTEC National Certificate in Social Care, which is equivalent to two vocational A Levels and comprises of 9 core units plus 3 additional specialist units.
The second year of the course will comprise of the outstanding units to make up the National Diploma in Social Care, cumulatively equivalent to three vocational A Levels.

National Diploma in Social Care units to be studied in the second year:
- Sociological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
- Psychological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
Plus additional specialist units.
Learners may also have the opportunity to resit GCSE English or Maths or undertake a GCSE Science related subject e.g, Human Health & Physiology.
How will I Learn?
The course is delivered by staff who possess both educational and professional qualifications. This is essential when relating theory to practice. Learners will experience a variety of teaching and learning methods including role play, practical activities, group work and more formal lessons providing underpinning knowledge.
How will I be Assessed?
Assessment on the course is continuous and involves the completion of assignments, group presentations and practical activities together with reports from work experience settings.
Learners' work on additional qualifications is assessed using a variety of methods from portfolios of work to external examinations.
What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life. There is an opportunity for learners to gain additional qualifications, enabling them to obtain a wider understanding of Health and Social Care and increasing prospects for employment or higher education, such as:
- NCFE Certificate in Nutrition and Health
- NCFE Certificate in Drug Awareness
- BTEC Award in Infection Control
Are there any Trips or Visits?
Trips and visits may be arranged to complement your studies. Learners are encouraged to take part in College organised enrichment activities.
Is there any Work Experience?
As part of the course you are required to undertake a period of work experience in a variety of health and social care settings, for example, hospitals, medical centres, day and residential care settings, primary schools, nurseries and other specialist centres.
Learners will need to pay for travel costs to and from placements (where applicable) but anyone experiencing financial difficulty may apply to the College for financial assistance.
What can I Progress to?
The course is equivalent to three A Levels and consequently many learners choose to continue their studies at university, for example, nursing (general, mental health and disabilities), social work, probation service, prison service and police. Alternatively, due to the range of subjects studied there are many opportunities for employment such as a healthcare/care assistant, youth and community work and HM Forces. This course also provides the opportunity to progress into teaching.

Many ex-College learners have been successful in gaining employment with local employers and progressing onto degree level courses.
