· A BTEC First Qualification Caring, Early Years or a related vocational area. · An Intermediate GNVQ in an appropriate vocational area. · A GCSE equivalent to four passes at grade C or above. Learners who wish to progress into a profession allied to medicine such as physiotherapy, radiography or dietetics are likely to benefit from having Maths and Science as GCSE passes. · Another related level 2 qualification, including NVQ level 2 in Care or Health Care. · Mature students with relevant work experience may also be able to access the course.

Course summary:
This is a two year full-time course.
This course has been developed to prepare learners to work in health-related careers, in a professional capacity. It provides the knowledge, skills and understanding required for working in a health environment. It also contributes to the underpinning knowledge for level 3 NVQ in Care and Healthcare.

Course content:
The course consists of

12 units, 9 of which are core units together with 3 specialist units.

Some of the core units include;
* Development through the Life Stages
* Physiological Disorders
* Public Health
* Developing Effective Communication in Health & Social Care

Some of the Specialist Units include:-
* Health Psychology
* Sociological Perspectives for Health & Social Care
* Caring for Children & Young People
* Supporting & Protecting Adults
There is also a mandatory requirement of 400 hours relevant work experience.
Students will also be expected to complete Key Skills, Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology at the appropriate level

Assessment procedure:
Some units will be externally assessed using an Integrated Vocational Assignment set by Edexcel. This will be marked by members of the Course Team and re-marked by Edexcel appointed markers.
The remaining units will be assessed by members of the course team against the criteria supplied with each unit.
Each unit will be awarded a grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. A Pass will have a value of 2 points, a Merit 4 and a Distinction 6. These points will be totalled at the end of the course to give an overall grade.

Progression opportunities:
This is a 12 unit course and provides a specialist, work related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the care sector. It is equivalent to two A levels.
You will throughout the two year period acquire practical skills which will be transferable to the care sector or will prepare you for further studies in Higher Education.

Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance.
