Course programme
What it's all about?
Although we require a commitment of 6 hours per week to attend college, a further 15 hours per week is needed for private study time.
This course is designed to give you an understanding of the design processes necessary for all aspects of decorative interiors, from conception to the finished product, and to help you develop the skills required for this lively and fast-moving sector.
You'll work through a series of short modules, including a broad range of related subjects such as decorative paint techniques, upholstery, soft furnishing, fabric design and printing, the history of design, and the development of drawing skills.
Individual creativity is encouraged, and tutors will help you to develop your own ideas and problem-solving skills in order to communicate your ideas more effectively. There is also an emphasis on time management, organisational procedures, innovative development of ideas based on sound research, and the use of new technology. This course will give you the knowledge and skills to work as a professional interior decorator. On completing the course, you may choose to enter the workplace or go on to take higher-level courses and progress to a BA (Hons) degree in Interior Architecture & Design.
Course content
First year
This will help you discover your strengths and experiment with ideas, materials and the design process. You'll develop skills that will give you a good foundation on which to build during the second year.
Modules include: Drawing Development, Historical and Contextual Understanding, Materials, Techniques and Processes, Ideas and Concepts, Computers in Art and Design, and Exploring Specialist Techniques.
Second year
You'll extend your skills with the following modules: Visual Communication, Design Methods, Specialist Techniques, Art and Design Exploration, and Art and Design Application.
Assessment
Students are assessed on completion of each module brief. Students are required to pass all the module briefs to successfully pass the course.
Live briefs
Your final major project should be a real job for a client or a simulation, initiated by the student and conducted in the final term of the course.
Resources
You will enjoy the use of purpose-built studios and workshops with excellent facilities such as industrial sewing machines, digital printing and specialist IT equipment. All the tutors are specialists in their own field of work.
Study visits
Students are actively encouraged to participate in organised educational visits to interior design exhibitions, trade shows, historical houses and galleries, and to undertake visits in their own time for the purpose of research and to develop design ideas.
Progression & career opportunities
The course prepares students for higher-level courses and progression to a BA (Hons) degree in Interior Design, or for employment in interior decorating.
