About this course

Examination qualifications: In order to study Performing Arts you will need to have at least 4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, or Intermediate GNVQ in a related subject. You must have at least grade C in either English Language or English Literature as evidence that you could produce the necessary written coursework. Audition requirements: You will attend a group audition at which you will take part in an improvisation workshop. This may take place during the early evening on a weekday.

BTEC National Certificate in Performance
During this course you will encounter an exciting array of vastly differing performing styles. You will develop your skills in acting, singing and dancing and will play a crucial role in the organisation and development of your performance pieces.

The first project involves devising an original Pantomime from scratch and performing it to a group of primary school children in the local area. Subsequent to this you will perform in a Shakespeare play, explore the ideas and themes of contemporary theatre and perform in a musical.

You will be active, involved, organised and challenged!

The climax of our devised version of The Beggars Opera.

What will I study on this course?
The BTEC National Certificate (Performance) is a two-year course, made up of twelve units and is the equivalent of two A Levels. The course is practical involving performance, coursework, written examinations with many opportunities to take part in plays and musical productions. You will be encouraged to take 2 other AS or A2 courses with the Certificate.

How is this course assessed?
11 hours per week of directed study time. Rehearsing, Performing,
Performance Workshop, the Performing Arts Business. Eight units enabling you to
develop skills in theatre performance, voice, acting, and dance.

During each term of the course you will work towards a performance that might involve acting, dance, singing, or a combination of disciplines. You will investigate the structure of the performing arts industry through case studies, work placements and visiting lecturers and theatre companies. Towards the end of the course you will plan a possible route into employment either immediately or after further study.

What kind of student will do well on this course?
A typical performing arts student is lively, ambitious, hardworking and expressive.

It is vital that you should be willing to perform in public, work with others, solve problems, plan your own learning, and communicate effectively in speech. You should also be able to use information technology for research, and for drafting and writing coursework.
