BTEC National Certificate in Radio Production

Course content:
Unit 1: Research Techniques
In this unit, you will develop research skills and will also learn how to use market research to help you make informed choices about creative decisions.

Unit 2: Pre-Production Techniques
This unit will develop your understanding of pre-production, covering how to decide upon resource requirements for production and post-production, how to set about finding them and how to organise and plan. Exploring health, safety and legal issues will help you to conduct production risk assessments and develop an awareness of the rights and responsibilities of programme makers.

Unit 8: Understanding the Radio Industry
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the ways in which the radio industry is organised, the types of jobs available and how to obtain or progress to those jobs. Everyone working in radio is affected by, and should understand, the legal and ethical constraints that apply to producing programmes and this also forms part of your module. Guest speakers from the radio industry will contribute their experiences to this module.

Unit 35: Interview Techniques
Throughout this unit you will focus on radio interview techniques, developing your ability to conduct effective, successful interviews for radio. You will also study the techniques implemented by successful radio interviewers and use these to improve your own skills.

Unit 41: Radio Drama
This unit introduces you to the skills involved in devising and scripting drama for radio " including recording techniques and sound effect production! As well as producing your own original work, you will explore codes, conventions and audience readings to help develop and evaluate the work of yourself and others.

Unit 42: Radio Studies
This unit is intended to develop your critical awareness of key issues in radio production. You will examine the wider implications of radio for society, how it is organised, produced and received, as well as its prospects for the future. Visits to radio stations will form a key part of this module, enabling you to see production in action.
