BTEC National Diploma in Agriculture
The Edexcel BTEC National Diploma in Agriculture is designed to equip individuals for success in employment and develop knowledge, understanding and the practical skills required in the agricultural industry at an operational level. The qualification also enables progression onto Higher Education.

The course usually involves a two year programme that integrates practical and theoretical aspects.

The first year is a balance of underpinning knowledge and practical skills development with the second year concentrating on business management and the detailed husbandry required to run the various enterprises found within the agricultural industry. A number of work placements lasting for three weeks are included during the two years to provide practical experience at work which will develop the skills learnt at college.

The units offered will include the following, although changes could be made to reflect the business environment in which the industry operates:
  • Livestock management
  • Principles of machinery
  • Principles of plant and soil science
  • Livestock production
  • Estate skills
  • Machinery operations
  • Industry experience
  • Farm diversification
  • Grass crop production
  • Sheep, dairy, beef and pig production
  • Crop production
  • Business management
  • Workshop practice
  • Investigative project
  • Agriculture and the environment

The course will also offer the opportunity to undertake further skills qualifications, which may include FEPA (Food and Environment Protection Act - Spray Certificates), Rough Terrain Forklift, National Proficiency Test and Safety qualifications.

Key skills are also taught within the course. These concentrate on further developing numeracy, communication and Information Technology skills.

Qualification equivalence (Level 3)

This course is equivalent to three A Levels, or the NVQ Level 3 qualification.

Employment and career prospects

A BTEC National Diploma equips students for many employment sectors.

Holders of the Diploma have secured jobs in farm management, commodity trading, financial services, sales and marketing, research support, merchanting and work overseas.

Progression to Foundation Degree and Degree qualification courses is straight forward. Prospects for employment at present are good.

Recommended entry requirements

Candidates are encouraged to have undertaken a significant period of practical experience prior to commencement.

Candidates should possess five GCSEs at grades A, B or C including English (or equivalent qualifications, e.g. a BTEC First Diploma at Merit level). Candidates possessing a National Certificate in Agriculture qualification (at Credit level) are also welcome to apply.
