BTEC National Diploma In Art & Design (Incorporating National Award)- 3D

Students wishing to study a full time course leading to possible careers in a range of 3 dimensional design and making specialisms – interior design, furniture design, product design, jewellery design, landscape/spatial design, model-making for film and TV, architecture and CAD.

4 GCSEs (A-C), Intermediate GNVQ in Art & Design or First Diploma in Art & Design, plus portfolio of work, but this may be waived in very exceptional circumstances (i.e. mature/overseas students). In such cases interview by portfolio may be sufficient.

This specialist vocational course commences with a general introduction to the wide range of skills required by a 3D designer. Preliminary projects in the workshop area provide underpinning knowledge in Materials and Processes, Model Making, Health and Safety, Technology, Wood, Metal, Plastics and Ceramics. Studio studies include drawing and visualisation, perspective and technical drawing. Related Computer Studies, Business Studies and Historical and Contextual
Studies provide a backdrop to the practical studies. Throughout the course student work is project based, with each project having clear objectives and a definite deadline. As the course progresses the projects become progressively more involved and aim to develop a portfolio for students which is suitable for application to study at Degree or HND level or, in some cases, for application direct to work. At all times students receive one-to-one support and guidance from trained professional design staff and have a personal tutor assigned to them to help them through the course. The course is very much based on unlocking the students’ creativity and they are encouraged to explore all the possibilities of 3D design and find their own individual responses, whilst focusing on their career goals. A European visit, industrial visits plus visits to galleries/museums may possibly be arranged.
