About this course

This course is equivalent to three A levels and is open to applicants who have four GCSE subjects at grade C or above. Mature students who do not possess four GCSE's will be considered based on a portfolio of photographic evidence. All appicants must have visual awareness, commitment and an interest in photography. This will be discussed at an interview with specialist staff.

Course content:
This vocational course will introduce you to the key elements of photographic design including visual and technical processes, professional practise, digital imaging, critical theory, business studies and photographic history.
Practical assignments will enable you to explore a range of photography genres e.g. portraiture, landscape, advertising, editorial, fashion and still life.
Gallery visit,work placements and 'live' projects will develop your confidence and independence in creative thought and practice.
You will work with specialist staff on location and in the photography studio and you will have access to state of the art resources as used within the photographic industry. Therefore this course provides an ideal starting point for those who wish to pursue a career or higher education in photography.

Assessment procedure:
The BTEC National Diploma in Photography encourages exploration of processes, techniques and development of ideas.
Continuous formative assessment encourages confidence and gives students the opportunity to build on their skills and knowledge.
Assignments will enable you to accumulate a portfolio of work for your progression to work or higher education. These assignments are internally assessed and externally moderated.

Progression opportunities:
You will develop your creativity and skills in preparation for higher education e.g. an HNC, HND, BA Degree or Foundation Degree in Photography or employment.
Employment opportunities include photo lab technician, assistant studio photographer, freelance photographer in specialist field or press photography. Opportunities for employment also exist in other related media professions.
