Who is this course for? Young people aged 16-18.

What do I need to get on the course? You need at least four GCSEs at grade A-C including a humanities subject. Alternatively, you may have a GNVQ Intermediate or BTEC First Diploma with merit or distinction and key/basic skills in communications or application of number at level 2. You must show evidence of an interest in health and social care. You must provide one reference and attend an interview, where you can show your Record of Achievement or other examples of work. Some work experience in the care services would be useful.

What will I study? Units include Human Growth and Development, Communication and values in Health and Social Care, Activities for health and well being, Social aspects and lifestyle choices. You will have the opportunity to resit GCSE English or Maths if you have a D or above.
Key skills:
Communication - developing students skills in discussion, research and written work. Application of Number - developing skills in interpreting information involving numbers, carrying out calculations and presenting findings. Information Technology - developing students skills in using IT for findings, exploring and presenting information (text, images and numbers).
You will spend some time on a work experience placement or organise your own voluntary work with a suitable client group such as children, older people, people with special needs. This course is assessed by a range of methods including, projects, case studies and external test for some units.

What qualification will I get? GCE Applied A-Level in Health and Social Care (Double Award)

What can I do after the course? Successful students may progress to:
Higher Education or employment in health and social care in a range of settings such as community work, social work, housing services, welfare work, youth and community work.

How do I get on the course? For September 2009 entry - complete a College application form, followed by interview.

How much does the course cost? Home students aged 16-18 do not pay the course fee. There is a £40 fee for a CRB check.
