Course programme

Information about the course

The Art and Design course allows students to explore and develop their skills in a range of art
and design areas. The first year is concerned with developing individual ability in drawing,
painting, printmaking, imagingmaking, textiles and 3D skills, via a range of projects. The
second year of study is more specialised, where the student can concentrate on a particular
area of Art and Design.
1st Year - Students develop their skills by working on a series of projects based on the
following Art and Design areas: Graphic Design (including illustration, typography and
photography), 3D Studies (including project design furniture design, modelmaking and ceramics
and workshop skills. Fashion and Textiles/Surface Pattern Design (including printing, felt
making, embroidery and manipulation of materials), and Fine Art (including drawing, painting,
sculpture and printmaking).
2nd Year - The second year allows students to select one of the specialist areas studied during
the 1st year. (Graphic Design, 3D Design, Fine Art or Fashion and Textiles) and continue their
development in that area in more depth. This is underpinned by a programme of Art and Design
History, Contextual Studies, Business/Professional Practice and Computing/Computer
Graphics.

Additionality

Educational trips, plus visits to galleries/museums will be arranged.

Progression

Higher Education:
BA or HND in the above art and design specialisms.
Employment:
Possible careers
Fine art practice, design careers in textiles, fashion, product, interior, furniture and
model-making, illustration, graphics, packaging or computer-based design.
