About this course

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, one of which should be English and one design related or a BTEC 1st Diploma in Art & Design pass or merit and GCSE English or Key Skills Level 2 Communication. Mature students will be accepted onto the course without formal qualifications, subject to previous experience or evidence of design skills.

Who is the course for?
The course is for anyone wishing to either improve their knowledge of, or pursue a career in Product, Interior/Spatial Design, 3D Design or related subject areas.

What is the course about?
The course offers you the opportunity of in depth study into many rewarding areas of a 3D design and is a 2 year modular programme delivered through 17 units. Within Product Design you will explore subjects including ceramics, furniture design, jewellery and of course product design. With Interior and Spatial design you will study subjects such as room styling, exhibition design, plan drawing and model making, as well as colour theory and lighting. You will learn to use computer aided design techniques to help you express your design ideas. As part of your course you will complete a diagnostic first semester where you will build your general arts skills, through painting and drawing, photography and history of art and design. A range of field trips and visits to exhibitions throughtout the course will help inspire you and help you develop a thorough knowledge of your area of design.

Will I need anything else?
You will be expected to provide a basic art kit containing a range of painting and drawing equipment, a sketchbook and plastic portfolio. A list will be given to you at interview. You may also be required to purchase specialist materials for your project work.

How long & often do I attend?
This course is offered as a two year substantial programme and requires attendance of several lectures, practical sessions and workshops per week; additional time will also need to be spent by the students in carrying out a project work and to complete research. You will be required to attend for a minimum of 80%.

How will I be assessed?
The course units are delivered through assignment briefs and the completion of practical project work. Your wok is assessed by your tutors and the grades awarded are externally verified by assessors appointed by the exams board. Assessment is continuous. You will be marked on both practical and written project work which will provide the evidence on which your grades will ge based. There is no formal exam at the end of the course.

What opportunities will this lead to?
On completion of this qualification you may progress to higher education to study for HND Foundation Degree or B.A. (Hons) Degree. Alternatively you may choose to seek employment within your chosen field of study. You will be advised and assisted in your choice of progression by your course tutors.
