About this course

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:
A BTEC First Diploma, at Merit or Distinction level, in a related subject
At least five GCSEs at grades A*-C, including Maths or English. A - C grade in core Biology or C in Sciences is recommended.

BTEC National Diploma Sport

What is BTEC National Diploma Sport?
This is a two year full-time course providing a specialist, work-related programme of study. It covers the key knowledge and practical skills required for those who have already decided the specialist area they wish to study.

If you not only enjoy taking part in sport but also have a real interest in the aspects surrounding and supporting performance then this course is for you. It will give you the opportunity to develop your knowledge and investigate a wide range of aspects; from the scientific to the sociological, from the psychological to the nutritional.

Is the BTEC National Diploma Sport suitable for me?
It has been set up for those students who have a real interest in the theoretical and practical aspects of sports development and fitness.

How will I learn?
You will be taught by specialist teachers in classrooms in the new Sports Centre with access to the Sports Hall, Fitness Room and Playing Fields.

You will study 8 core units:
  • Body in Action
  • Health and Safety in Sport
  • Training and Fitness in Sport
  • Sport Coaching
  • Sports Development
  • Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
  • Practical Team Sports
  • Practical Individual Sports

There are also 10 specialist units. These cover a wide range of aspects from nutrition, sports injuries, officiating in sport, sports psychology, work experience and organising sports events.

How will I be assessed?
The course consists of 18 units over 2 years.

Each unit will be graded Referral, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Your overall grades will be determined by how well you have achieved across all 18 units. You will be awarded three grades on completion of the course (e.g. PPP, MMP, DDM, DDD)

Progression
BTEC National Diploma Sport students can progress to a Higher Education course in Sports Studies, Leisure/Recreation Management, Sports Coaching/Development or specific vocational training in fitness. Another option available to them is to seek employment within the leisure industry.

Course costs
Essential: £25 for textbooks. There will be some costs £48 for this course, i.e. Governing Body Coaching Courses: . You will be expected to provide suitable sportswear for the practical sessions.

In addition you will need to pay for a CRB check, if you have not already had one

If the cost of equipment, materials and trips may cause you financial hardship, there is the opportunity to apply for help from the College Access Fund.

You may have the opportunity to take part in an optional outdoor adventure week in March or April. This will cover theoretical and practical aspects of an Outdoor and Adventurous Activities unit, delivered in a fun, motivating, engaging and inspiring way. This unit can be used towards your final course grade. The week will cost approximately £300 and take place during term time.
