Why study the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care?
The BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care is a specialist work-related programme of study that covers the key knowledge and practical skills in the Health and Social Care sector. You will learn how to carry out some of the practical skills such as measuring clients vital signs (bloodpressure, pulse, temperature and respiration), first aid skills (with a first aid certificate), caring for a virtual baby, caring for disabled clients, heart dissection etc.
What do I study?
There are eighteen units to study over the two years. This consists of ten core units and eight specialist units.
The core units include:
- Equal opportunities and clients' rights
- Communicating and supportive skills in health care
- The basic anatomy and physiology of the major organs of the body
- Lifespan development
- Health promotion
- Research methods
Assessment:
The course consists of coursework only. This will involve different methods of assessment eg essays, posters, practical tasks (carrying out first aid), leaflets, presentations etc.
Work Placement:
You will have the opportunity to undergo work placement one day per week to enable a good understanding of the course and develop some of the skills used in the care setting. This will be in a range of Health & Social Care settings.
Where does the BTEC National Diploma in Health & Social Care take me?
Successful completion of the course offers several routes for progression. These include:
- Higher Education opportunities such as a Degree/Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Radiotherapy, Paramedics, Speech and Language Therapy, Health Studies etc.
- Direct entry into employment within the Health & Social Care Services for example, as a Clinical Support Nurse, Home Help, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Physiotherapy Assistants etc.
- Further learning opportunities within employment such as training possibly in National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).
