Course Content

The BTEC National is an advanced level vocational IT course which involves the theoretical and practical study of both computer and IT related topics. This exciting course includes a wide range of units that will provide an excellent foundation for students wishing to either progress towards a course in higher education or enter the world of work in IT.

This is a two-year course which is equivalent to either two or three A levels. The certificate course is equivalent to two A levels and the diploma is equivalent to three A levels. Students are then able to study either one or two further AS/A2 subjects.

The BTEC National is recognised by both higher education establishments and industry. The content of the course is a combination of both the AS/A2 ICT and Computing courses but has a heavy emphasis on using Multimedia software where students are encouraged to use a wide range of software.

This BTEC course provides the knowledge, understanding and skills for students wishing to enter a career in Multimedia Digital Design and Web Design, Software Development and Management.Students will also be equipped to enter a career as an IT practitioner in the area of Business Systems, User Support and Software Development.Students will leave with a high standard of skills in the Adobe Software Suite and Creative Design Software, e.g. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks together with good programming skills.

There are no examinations as the course is totally assessed through a range of coursework assignments and practical exercises.

The BTEC National is suitable for students who have a keen interest in following a career in the wide field of IT and Computing and want to develop their expertise and knowledge whilst acquiring practical skills. It is suitable for students who wish to go directly into employment after completing the award as well as those who wish to follow an ICT or Computing related course at university.
