BTEC National Certificate in ScienceWhy should I study Science at Cardinal Newman College?The sciences at Cardinal Newman are simply outstanding, the best of any college in the area. Students are taught in fantastic new facilities including laboratories complete with state of the art technology. We have an unrivalled enrichment programme which has included visits across the country and abroad to places such as Iceland. Regular study support is provided for all students by teaching staff.

The BTEC National Certificate in Science is a vocational course that is designed for students who prefer a course based on coursework rather than examination components. It is a two year course and is equivalent to two A Levels.
Will I enjoy the course?
This a vocational course and involves a significant amount of practical work and students will have the opportunity to visit laboratories and industrial chemical plants. The course provides a route into employment within a scientific field such as hospital technician, analytical laboratory or quality control work.
What will I study?
The following core modules will be studied:

· Fundamentals of Science

· Scientific Practical Techniques

· Perceptions of Science

· Working in the Science Industry

· Application of numbers for Science technicians and Scientific investigation

Further Modules are studied from the Forensic Science Pathway and may include:

· Chemical Laboratory Techniques

· Criminology

· Forensic Evidence Collection and Analysis

· Forensic Photography

· Criminal Psychology and Traffic Accident Investigation
Progression
The course is equivalent to two A Levels and as such provides a route into higher education. Students typically progress on to courses in chemical, biological or physical sciences or may wish to specialise in analytical or forensic science work
