Course programme

Overview

The course will develop your skills and understanding of sport.

You will learn about how the body works relating to sport, the anatomy of the body, organisation and development of sport, fitness testing and training and develop your skills in sports coaching and leadership. There will be opportunities to take part in the team sports and other sporting activities and there is the potential to take additional related qualifications/awards, including Emergency First Aid, Fitness Instructor at level 1 and 2, Community Sport Leaders Award level 2 and FA level 1 Football Coaching award.

The Subsidiary Diploma takes one year to complete and covers 7 units. You will achieve the equivalent of one A level grade A*-C. Units will be taken from the following:

  • Principles of anatomy and physiology in sport,
  • The physiology of fitness,
  • Assessing risk in sport,
  • Fitness training and programming,
  • Practical team sports,
  • Leadership in sport,
  • Exercise, health and lifestyle,
  • Sports coaching,
  • Sports development,
  • Sports injuries,
  • Rules, regulations and officiating in sport,
  • Work experience in sport.

This is not an exhaustive list and units may be subject to change.


Entry Requirements

  • A minimum of five GCSEs grade A*-C, including English language and preferably in science and PE, or a high level of participation in sporting activities, and maths at grade D or above, or
  • a level 2 qualification at overall merit grade, including English at level 2 and maths at level 1.
