BTEC Subsidiary/Extended Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic) - Level 3 Overview

This course provides an in-depth introduction to a career in engineering.

This course covers certain requirements of the advanced apprenticeship. Details of the units studied includes:

Six core units:

• Communications for engineering technicians
• Health and safety in the engineering workplace
• Mathematics for engineering technicians
• Engineering project
• Electrical and electronic principles
• Mechanical principles and applications

Plus 11 specialist units:

• Principles and applications of electronic devices and circuits
• Engineering design
• Selecting and using programmable controllers (PLCs)
• Further mathematics for engineering technicians
• Computer aided manufacturing
• Electro, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and devices
• Computer aided drafting
• Engineering primary forming processes
• Setting and proving secondary processing machines
• Applications of computer numerical control in engineering
• Features and applications of electrical machines

Entry requirements

• Four GCSEs at grade C or above in maths, science, English and technology, or:
• A relevant Level 2 qualification in engineering and completion of the four-week introductory course

You will need to attend an interview with the tutor before being accepted on to the course. You may also need to supply at least one written reference from a teacher or employer (in some cases two) and/or your current school or college report.

Mature students (those aged 21 or over) who do not have the qualifications required for entry may still be eligible, subject to an interview. Relevant experience, a strong portfolio of work and a commitment to the subject you wish to study may be acceptable for certain courses.

The table below shows you when the course starts. You may be charged a fee for your course depending on your age and circumstances. If you are aged 24 or over and studying a qualifying Level 3, 4 or 5 course you may be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the costs.

How long is the course?

The Subsidiary Diploma is a one year course.

On successfully achieving the Subsidiary Diploma, you could progress to the second year to complete and achieve the Extended Diploma.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods include internally set practical-based assignments, written work or presentations.

What does the course lead to?

Successful completion can lead to a range of job roles in mechanical and electrical/electronic or manufacturing engineering, or progression to a university level course either here at Vision West Notts or at a university.

What will I study?

Study modules that cover CAD, electrical and mechanical principles, electronics and CNC.

Study programmes

It is an entry requirement for some courses to have gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths (see entry requirements). If the entry requirements to a course do not require A*-C in these subjects, and you haven’t already gained GCSEs A*-C in English and maths before joining us, you will continue to study English and maths as part of your programme and take appropriate qualifications in these subjects with the aim of achieving A* to C grade. In addition, to help you gain essential skills for employment, every student aged under 19 and studying a full-time course at college will take part in our study programmes alongside their main subject qualification.
