This Business and Finance course runs in 2016/17.

Do you have an interest in current financial and business issues? Do you find yourself asking questions about how the financial crisis impacted on businesses? Are you interested in the way businesses obtain and manage their financing? If so, Business and Finance could be the right course for you.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE?

The core theme throughout this degree is to provide you with sound financial knowledge, placed in a business context while also allowing you to specialise in the wider business and finance areas.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

• opportunities to apply to undertake relevant work experience involving business and finance functions in private and public organisations, both in the UK and overseas. In the past, these have included Tesco, the NHS, IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Toys R Us;
• well-developed links with employers such as IBM, HSBC and the National Health Service (NHS) and professional accounting and finance bodies such as the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), CFA Society of the UK (CFA UK) and Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) who deliver sessions with students in commercial awareness, employability and working in the business sector;
• access to teaching staff who have relevant professional qualifications and commercial backgrounds, who bring this experience into their teaching;
• Coventry Business School is currently a member of European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) and the Association of Business Schools (ABS).

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

During your first year, you will study the foundation subjects of business and finance including the fundamentals of business, an introduction to finance, business economics and marketing as well as developing your wider numeracy and IT skills.

This theme continues in the second year with a greater emphasis on finance, business management, accounting and applied marketing. Research skills are also developed in this year in preparation for a final year research project on a topic of your own choosing.

In the final year of study, a wide range of optional subjects in finance and business are available enabling you to choose a specialist path you may wish to follow in your career.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE BE TAUGHT?

Your course will be based on a series of weekly lectures followed by smaller seminars and workshops. Some classes may be held in IT suites where students have individual PCs and work using appropriate
software packages.

You will benefit from regular meetings with an academic personal tutor who will review and discuss your progress and will be available for advice. You will have access to additional academic services such as academic writing and numerical support. There is also a range of non-academic support functions available.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

An estimated percentage breakdown of how your final grade is assessed is as follows: formal examinations 50%; coursework, tests, essays 40%; group work etc. 5%; presentations, posters etc. 5%.

TEACHING CONTACT HOURS

In a typical week you will have up to 14 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 2 hours of tutorials (or, later, individual project supervision) each week

Medium group teaching: 6 hours of practical classes, workshops or seminars each week

Large group teaching: 6 hours of lectures each week

Personal study: 22–24 hours studying and revising in your own time each week including some guided study using handouts, online activities, etc.
