About the subject
The Applied (vocational) A Level provides students with the opportunity to develop a detailed understanding of business issues and theory and to apply them to 'real' business situations. Students will need to be interested in how modern firms organise themselves, develop their products and services to meet consumer needs and how they have to respond to the external economic environment. The course covers the full range of business topics. Students will be expected to enjoy keeping up to date with the contemporary business issues and apply their knowledge to the modern business environment. There is a lot of scope for developing business skills in communications, time management and teamwork. The heavy emphasis on coursework and the case studies used in the examined modules give students the opportunity to think creatively and develop their opinions based on business fact and theory.
Compared to the AS/A Level, the course is of a more practical nature which is predominantly assessed through coursework assignments. The standard required by the coursework is very high as students are allowed to use the full range of research opportunities available to them; these include textbooks, class theory, personal experience, the internet and observation.

Learning Styles
You must have excellent time management skills and the ability to work long hours on research. This is a very rewarding method of study and assessment but it does require students to deal with large amounts of information and be able to construct well-structured reports with a great deal more depth and scope than the average A Level essay.
Group work, direct research and presentations also form part of the learning experience as students are developing real business and academic skills as they prepare for coursework and case study examinations.

Subject combinations and progression
Students combine this subject with a wide range of other course combinations. Business can be effectively combined with almost all curriculum areas, as all students will in the future be working in some type of business environment.
