Who is this course for? This qualification equips you with a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to embark upon a successful business career. The National Diploma will introduce a broad range of occupational routes and help you progress into employment or move on to further study. The course is a broad based, practical, work-related course which links with a range of local and national businesses. A variety of enterprise activities within the course have been developed to identify any budding entrepreneurs.

Previous knowledge required: A genuine interest in business and customer care together with the desire to succeed in this dynamic and challenging environment. Four relevant GCSE's at grade C or above; or an appropriate NVQ level 2, BTEC First Diploma or Intermediate GNVQ with a satisfactory grade. Applications from mature students, those working in the industry or those wishing to return to a business related environment are particularly welcomed.

What will I study? The course reflects the needs of the business and comprises 12 units which include:- Exploring Business Activity; Investigating Business Resources; Introduction to Marketing; Introduction to Market Research; Effective People, Communication and Information; Human Resource Management in Business; Managing a Business Event; Understanding Retailing; Introduction to Accounting; Introduction to Internet and e-Business; Understanding Business Ethics; Exploring Creative Product Promotion; Starting a Small Business; Exploring Team Development; Career Development Planning in Business; Website Production and Management; Advanced Database Skills; Investigating International Business.

What else will I do? You may also study key skills, short courses in enterprise and first aid and resit GCSE Maths and / or English. There will also be an opportunity to study a text processing or IT qualification. Guest speakers from local and national business will input into the course and you will take part in visits and work-related activities, some of which may be residential.

How will I be assessed? By completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations and activities. There are no examinations at the end of this course.

What will I achieve? BTEC National Certificate in Business (Equivalent to 2 A levels). A range of key skills at level 2 or 3. An ICT qualification - eg CLAIT. OCN Enterprise units and HSE Emergency First Aid.

What can I do afterwards? You can progress straight into employment or onto further study at Coleg Powys or another higher education institution. There are a variety of potential careers to explore, all of which will benefit from your studies. For example: facilities manager, insurance claims manager. customer services manager. trainee accounts manager or estate agent.

Materials required: You will be required to purchase a course text book and all students are encouraged to take advantage of local, national and international visits that have been arranged.
