The Business Law LLB at DMU allows you to focus on all aspects of business and commercial law. You can specialise in areas including international trade law, competition law and company law, giving you the breadth of knowledge you need to start your career as a business legal professional.
In the first year you will study four core modules to give you a strong foundation in law. In years two and three you are free to select the modules that reflect your own interests and career aims, although certain modules are compulsory if you want to achieve qualifying status.

Our Leicester De Montfort Law School provides a unique programme for final year students who wish to pursue a research or academic career to work as paid researchers supporting major research projects and to develop their own research expertise.
All students can hone their legal skills by engaging with our Legal Advice Centre, which provides advice to businesses, organisations and individuals, with the opportunity to claim Qualifying Work Experience to speed your way to qualification as a Solicitor.
In addition, recent graduates from our Law School have gone onto careers such as Legal Associate at Barratt Developments PLC, Case Worker at Ministry of Justice, Investigation Support Assistant at Leicestershire Police and Prosecution Manager at Arriva Rail North.
A typical offer is 112 UCAS points. You need to study at least two subjects at A-level or equivalent (eg BTEC)
You must have at least five GCSEs at grades A*–C including English Language
Pass Access with 30 Level 3 credits at Merit (or equivalent)
English (Language or Literature) and Maths GCSE required as separate qualifications at grade C
We will normally require students to have had a break from full time education before undertaking the Access course

This course meets the requirements of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board, which means that you will graduate with full exemptions from the academic stage of the professional qualification for solicitors and barristers.

You will study in our fantastic dedicated law environment, which includes a mock courtroom, client interviewing room and an integrated law library all based in the Hugh Aston building.

Enjoy an international experience linked directly to your studies through our DMU Global programme – recent trips have seen students visit New York, Berlin, Toronto and Doha. Students visited key institutions in New York to gain valuable insights into the American justice system this involved a tour of the iconic Supreme Civil Court.
Our DMU Works team offer support to help you gain the skills and qualities that today’s employers are looking for through placement opportunities with local, national and global companies. Past students have successfully been placed at Toyota, PepsiCo, Hewlett-Packard, The Walt Disney Company and the NHS.

Teaching and assessment
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, group work and self-directed study. Assessment is through coursework (presentations, essays and reports) and usually an exam or test, which is typically weighted as follows in your first year:
- Exam: 70%
- Coursework: 30%
Teaching contact hours
This is a full-time course and in total you should be prepared to devote approximately 38 hours a week to your studies. In the first year, you will typically have up to 14 contact hours of teaching most weeks. Teaching is through a mix of lectures, tutorials, seminars and lab sessions and the breakdown of these activity types is shown in each module description.
Other: In addition each module provides a two hour surgery each week for individual consultation with the lecturer. You will also have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor and careers and/or subject meetings scheduled throughout the year.
Self-directed study: In order to prepare for, and assimilate, the work in lectures and seminars you will be expected to use our on-line resources, participate in flipped or virtual classroom discussions on our virtual learning environment (VLE) and engage in personal study and revision for approximately 25 hours per week.
Subsequent years follow a similar pattern, however, the contact time will vary depending on your subject mix and options chosen, and the teaching methods appropriate to the module. Further details are contained in each module description
