Course programme
MSc Business Strategy and the Environment
Full-Time Programme
Introduction
These programmes offer structured courses that analyse the relationship between business strategy and a range of environmental issues and challenges in today's world. Rather than focusing on the natural science of how pollution occurs or the technical practicalities of ameliorating it, the programmes explore how the environment has emerged as an important issue for business. Engaging with the philosophy of environmentalism, environmental policy and the nature of scientific debates about the environment, they outline possible ways of developing effective strategies for addressing the business threats and opportunities posed by environmental issues.
Teaching
Each core or option module is taught via lectures and seminars lasting one academic term (either autumn or spring). Revision sessions are held in the summer term before the examination period.
Assessment
Coursework and examinations. Master's programmes require a substantial piece of independent research in the form of a dissertation, which accounts for one third of the MSc.
Study Resources
Both the School of Geography and the School of Management and Organizational Psychology engage in significant collaborative research and have excellent contacts with many public and private sector organisations, professional bodies and researchers at other academic institutions.
Special Features
The programmes are management-based but genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on social science disciplines including law, economics and politics, as well as including a natural science course designed for students with social science backgrounds.
Funding
The MSc is recognised as a research training programme by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). For UK or EU applicants intending to pursue research, ESRC studentships (one year for the master's programme followed by three years of funding for research) may be available for candidates with a strong academic background.
