About this course
No formal entry qualifications are necessary. However the course is most suitable for applicants who are:-
- 16-18 years old
- have GCSE Grades E/G
- can demonstrate an appropriate level of emotional maturity and initiative to work with young children
- applications from mature applicants with other qualifications are welcomed.

Course programme
This course is designed to introduce students to the knowledge and understanding required in caring for children up to the age of eight.
Students will study the units listed below. A minimum attendance of 80% is required in each unit:
1. Personal Development
2. Human Growth and Development
3. Food and Nutrition
4. Health and Safety Practices in Home and Group Settings
5. Care of Children
6. Play and Practical Activities
7. Orientation to Work Programme.
Work Experience:
You are recommended to complete 15 days in a work placement. Placements may be selected from Crèches, Day Care, or Nursery classes. Tutorial staff will discuss and decide with you the best placement to suit your needs and preferences. These will be as close to your home as possible, but we cannot guarantee any specific requests.
You will also have the opportunity to obtain certificates in:
Key Skills IT at Level 1.
To gain your Foundation Award you will need to:
1. Complete a portfolio containing 5 tasks and 1 personal action plan.
2. Complete appropriate tasks throughout the course.
3. Receive a satisfactory tutor report.
4. Complete the required hours/days in placement.
5. Complete a short answer test paper covering units 2-7.
Further Study:
With the Foundation Award at the appropriate level you may consider progress to Level 2 qualifications, such as CACHE Certificate in Childcare and Education, BTEC First Diploma in Health & Social Care or NVQ Level 2 in Early Years Care and Education, provided you meet the entry criteria courses. To comply with legislation & national minimum standards, all learners will be screened by the Criminal Records Bureau.
