ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

4 GCSEs Grade E to include English, and an interview. Successful completion of BTEC Certificate in Life Skills, Citizenship and Community Studies at entry 3 level, Literacy at entry 3 level.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
The course is an introduction to working with children. It will help you to decide if you wish to undertake a career working with the age range 0-8 years. It provides opportunities for you to identify and achieve personal goals in education and training, and to develop basic skills in caring for children, that you will be able to use in further training. There is also an opportunity during the second half of the course to work with children in a variety of placements.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Students will be studying the following units:
  • Unit 1 Personal Development
  • Unit 2 Human Growth and Development
  • Unit 3 Food and Nutrition
  • Unit 4 Health and Safety Practices in Home and Group Settings
  • Unit 5 Care of Children
  • Unit 6 Play and Practical Activities
  • Unit 7 Orientation to Work programme
Unit 1 is assessed by tutor report. Units 2 to 6 are assessed by portfolio tasks. Unit 7 is assessed by an action plan prepared by the individual students. There is also a short answer test covering units 2-7.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
College classes provide the knowledge and understanding that will help to build confidence for practice in the work placements. The course consists of three days a week in college and one day a week for placement in a variety of settings for children from 0 to 7 years 11 months from the Spring term. As well as academic work, you will take part in practical workshops and regular fieldwork trips.

WHAT CAN THIS COURSE LEAD TO?
Successful students will be encouraged to progress to higher level courses that will increase employment potential.

Progression CACHE Certificate in Child Care and Education.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Students will be expected to have a police check prior to starting the course. Course material fees £150 (subject to change) covers: uniform, textbooks, trips, art materials, art pack and fieldwork trips. This is payable upon enrolment. There will be the planned visits.
