Course programme
Students follow a programme that gives a sound foundation of the knowledge and practical skills to work with children in a range of settings. These include the role of the adult and preparing for employment, physical, emotional and social care and development. You will attend college three days a week and placements for two days and occasionally spend a week in a training placement where practical skills will be assessed.
Course contentBreakdown of course/programme by Unit or module:
Students will study the subjects listed below and a minimum attendance of 80% is required in each unit:
1. An introduction to working with children.
2. The developing child.
3. Safe, healthy and nurturing environment for children.
4. Children and play.
5. Communication and professional skills with in childcare and education.
6. The childcare practioner in the workplace and one optional unit.
Practical training
Placements of 2 days a week and occasional week long placements provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable insight into a variety of work settings with children aged:
1-3 years 11 months
4-7 years 11 months
To comply with legislation and national standards all learners will be screened by the Criminal Records Bureau. Placement providers include Nurseries, Infant Schools, Pre-Schools, Playgroups, Day-Care Facilities. (Every effort will be made to find placements local to the student's home).

There will be continuous assessment on this course, as well as an examination and a portfolio to be completed.
